With Apple's popularity at a low, the maker of FrameMaker, Adobe Inc., declined to develop new versions of it for Mac OS X. Reviews were variable, with extensive praise for its sophisticated, glossy Aqua interface, but criticizing it for sluggish performance. The consumer version of Mac OS X was launched in 2001 with Mac OS X 10.0. Mac OS applications could be rewritten to run natively via the Carbon API many could also be run directly through the Classic Environment with a reduction in performance. Consumer releases of Mac OS X included more backward compatibility. The first version of Mac OS X, Mac OS X Server 1.0, was a transitional product, featuring an interface resembling the classic Mac OS, though it was not compatible with software designed for the older system. x, with this going from 10.0 up until 10.15 with macOS 11 Big Sur, Apple switched to numbering major releases with numbers that increase by 1 with every major release. Until macOS 11 Big Sur, all versions of the operating system were given version numbers of the form 10. Previous Macintosh operating systems (versions of the classic Mac OS) were named using Arabic numerals, as with Mac OS 8 and Mac OS 9. However, it is also commonly pronounced like the letter "X". The letter "X" in Mac OS X's name refers to the number 10, a Roman numeral, and Apple has stated that it should be pronounced "ten" in this context. Mac OS X was originally presented as the tenth major version of Apple's operating system for Macintosh computers until 2020. The project was first code named " Rhapsody" and then officially named Mac OS X. This purchase also led to Steve Jobs returning to Apple as an interim, and then the permanent CEO, shepherding the transformation of the programmer-friendly OPENSTEP into a system that would be adopted by Apple's primary market of home users and creative professionals. This led Apple to acquire NeXT in 1997, allowing NeXTSTEP, later called OPENSTEP, to serve as the basis for Apple's next generation operating system. Throughout the 1990s, Apple had tried to create a "next-generation" OS to succeed its classic Mac OS through the Taligent, Copland and Gershwin projects, but all were eventually abandoned. Its graphical user interface was built on top of an object-oriented GUI toolkit using the Objective-C programming language. The kernel of NeXTSTEP is based upon the Mach kernel, which was originally developed at Carnegie Mellon University, with additional kernel layers and low-level user space code derived from parts of BSD. There, the Unix-like NeXTSTEP operating system was developed, before being launched in 1989. The heritage of what would become macOS had originated at NeXT, a company founded by Steve Jobs following his departure from Apple in 1985. As of 2023, the most recent release of macOS is macOS 14 Sonoma. In 2020, Apple began the Apple silicon transition, using self-designed, 64-bit ARM-based Apple M series processors on the latest Macintosh computers. In 2006, Apple transitioned to the Intel architecture with a line of Macs using Intel Core processors. MacOS has supported three major processor architectures, beginning with PowerPC-based Macs in 1999. After sixteen distinct versions of macOS 10, macOS Big Sur was presented as version 11 in 2020, and every subsequent version has also incremented the major version number, similarly to classic Mac OS and iOS. Apple shortened the name to "OS X" in 2011 and then changed it to "macOS" in 2016 to align with the branding of Apple's other operating systems, iOS, watchOS, and tvOS. The derivatives of macOS are Apple's other operating systems: iOS, iPadOS, watchOS, tvOS, and audioOS.Ī prominent part of macOS's original brand identity was the use of Roman numeral X, pronounced "ten", as well as code naming each release after species of big cats, or places within California. All releases from Mac OS X Leopard onward with the exclusion of Mac OS X Lion are UNIX 03 certified. ![]() The first desktop version, Mac OS X 10.0, was released on March 24, 2001. During this time, Apple computers co-founder Steve Jobs had left Apple and started his own company, NeXT, developing the NeXTSTEP platform that would later be acquired by Apple to form the basis of Mac OS X. ![]() Mac OS X succeeded classic Mac OS, a Macintosh operating system from 1984 to 2001. Within the market of desktop and laptop computers, it is the second most widely used desktop OS, after Microsoft Windows and ahead of all Linux machines, including ChromeOS. It is the primary operating system for Apple's Mac computers. ![]() This change might also be more noticeable during the different months of the year since water usage tends to fluctuate. This, in turn, could slightly alter the smell and taste of the water. Thanks to this type of treatment, the bacteria, viruses, and metals in water can be eliminated. Lake turnover smell could also be caused by water treatment amenities – such as ozone. As you can probably already guess, when a lake turnover happens, all the phosphorus-rich water gets to the surface and gives the algae there enough fuel to bloom. The common thing between all of these is that they release phosphorus while decaying – the primary fuel of algae. This includes dead algae, dead weeds/leaves, and more. But that’s not everything – the hypolimnion also becomes the home to everything that sinks to the bottom during these months. Because of this, the bottom layer of water (or the hypolimnion) tends to get de-oxygenated – new oxygen cannot reach it. During the warm summer months, the lake’s water stratifies – as we already established. And if you do not know why this happens, then we have a brief explanation. One of the common reasons for lake turnover smell is the fact that the algae bloom during this process. However, the lake turning offer might not always be the cause of this event – there might be other factors at play. Many people report a noticeable change in the smell and taste of water when this happens. Dimictic – the water in these lakes stratifies during the summer and winter, and they usually experience turnover twice – once in spring and once in fall.Polymictic – they frequently mix throughout the year.Warm monomictic – a common type of lake whose water usually reaches the 39.2☏ mark during the winter, and they experience turnover during this time – such as the major lakes in the South. For example, most lakes in the Arctic are cold monomictic. Cold monomictic – the water in these lakes does not go over 39.2☏, so lake turnover occurs once during the summer months. There are four general categories, though: ![]() Lakes are also classified into several categories, depending on how often they turn over. Shallow lakes rarely have their water separate in layers with different temperatures, hence why they are more unlikely to turnover. It is important to add that not all lakes are stratified. But, typically, summer lake turnover is the most common scenario. During this process, the bottom layer of water starts shifting to the top – hence the term turning over.Īs we already mentioned, this process may happen more than once a year. It inevitably reaches a point in which it becomes denser than the water underneath, therefore causing it to sink. So, what does this mean in the context of a lake turning over? When the temperatures drop, the top layer of water starts to get colder as well. Geological Survey (USGS), water is densest at a temperature of 39.2☏ or 4.0☌. When the temperature of water changes, it also changes its density – hence why its weight fluctuates. Now that this is out of the way, it is time to mention water density. The bottom layer is called the hypolimnion. It has a very steep temperature gradient. This layer sits between the epilimnion and the hypolimnion. The middle layer is known as the thermocline. ![]() During the warmer months, this layer has a noticeably higher temperature. The upper layer is called the epilimnion. But why does this happen? Simply put, the water in stratified lakes can be split into three layers: But before we get to this part, let’s go into a bit more detail on the topic of ‘Why does a lake flip?’Īs we already mentioned, lakes flip when the weather gets colder. This might sometimes be the case – we will shed some light on these changes and how they could affect the lake’s inhabitants. ![]() But we will talk more about this in a bit.Īnother common topic is that lake turnovers result in changes to the smell and taste of the water. For example, the water in shallow lakes tends to mix more frequently, and it does not undergo the process of stratification. Of course, these turnovers could differ from each other depending on the size of the lake and the change in temperature. But what does it mean, and why does a lake turn over? This process usually takes place when we leave the warm summer months and the temperatures begin to drop. Whenever we get close to the colder months of the year, every experienced angler starts to mention the term ‘lake turnover’ more and more often. Urethane body kits are made out of heavy-duty molds and are machine-made, so the precision of finish is normally solid. The cost to develop a proto-type and mold for a complete urethane body kit is about 12 times that of a fiberglass body kit. Urethane body kits are more expensive than fiberglass ones because they cost a whole lot more to make. Poly-urethane body kits - Poly-urethane (also referred to as simply "urethane") is a techinical word that basically means "rubber". An example of this is the Duraflex brand of body kits, which is probably the most popular-selling line of body kits we offer. Extra note: some companies have introduced high-end fiberglass body kits that use a specialty flex resin that gives bodykit-buyers the best of both worlds: durabilty and affordabilty. Besides that, they're the most affordable type of body kit available. That being said, paint adheres really well to fiberglass, and fiberglass won't warp even in the most extreme of weather conditions. Also, most fiberglass body kits won't withstand a fender-bender as well as, for example, poly-urethane body kits. Fiberglass body kits are almost all made by hand, and because of that they don't have the same precision of fitment and finish as, say, your machine-made CAD-designed factory bumpers do. The main reason is because they're the most cost-effective to manufacture. Take a look:įiberglass body kits - These are the most prevalent body kits by far.
